Where we are located
Stanegate is located within a visible landmark, the 18th century Lemington Glassworks Cone, which is well worth a visit to view the 90 plus appliances on display. We are located very close to the western bypass and the chimney is clearly visible.
History of the Glassworks
The Glassworks Cone is 215 years old. In 1787 when the Glassworks was built, an Act of Parliament had just allowed glass to be made on Tyneside using plentiful local coal. The Duke of Northumberland provided land and the Northumberland Glass Company was established. It immediately started building the cone - new technology in 1780 which was designed to draw air from underground tunnels to raise the temperature of the glass to 2000°C. The 130ft high tower was made from 1.8 million bricks, each course slightly offset from the other to make the characteristic cone that has dominated the Tyne banks for so long.
Stanegate
The name Stanegate was chosen because it was the old road linking the west side of Newcastle with Carlisle. The road existed before Hadrian's Wall, and can still be seen in places along its cross country route.
